Have you ever dreamed of the perfect place to study and observe whales, dolphins or bird migrations? The Strait of Gibraltar is the place. It has the UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve designation since 2006; it is one of the most important areas in the world where to observe bird migrations. Strong tidal currents and turbulent winds concentrate in the Strait. This unique place where the waters of the Atlantic Ocean melt with and the Mediterranean Sea is home to many marine species as well as an important stopping point during migrations.

Only 14 km separate Europe from Africa. In less than one hour from Tarifa, you can contemplate and enjoy, with almost 100% probability, this marvellous natural spectacle. No need to travel very far to find amazing species; they are here, in the Strait.

Two continents, two tectonic plates, two seas…. In the Strait of Gibraltar you can observe up to 7 cetacean species like Fin Whales, Sperm whales, Killer Whales, Long-finned Pilot Whales, Dolphins, Striped Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins and occasionally Humpback Whales and Grey Dolphins. More species can be observed, Tuna fishes, Hammerhead Sharks, Moonfish, Flying fish, Swordfish and many more…What about the birds? Across the Strait of Gibraltar, more than 300 bird species migrate from one continent to another in search of food, breeding grounds or warmer temperatures. We can observe White Stork, Black Kite, European honey, Griffon vulture, Booted Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Montagu’s and Western marsh harrier, Egyptian vulture, Black Stork, Sparrowhawk, Osprey etc. Many marine birds like Cory’s shearwater, Balearic shearwater, Northern gannet, Razorbill, Atlantic puffin, Pomarine and Great skua. Also smaller species like Barn swallow, Common swift, European bee-eater can be seen.
